Markets are currently halted at CME Group due to an overheating data centre.

The Globex futures and options market, cash FX EBS market and direct and Bursa Malaysia Derivatives (BMD) markets are all impacted.

A problem was first identified at 20:40 CT yesterday, with the group stating that the CME Globex Futures & Options market was halted due to technical issues. Four minutes later, BMD Markets was halted. An update at 21:32 CT stated, “CME Globex Futures & Options Markets remain halted due to a technical issue, which we expect to resolve in the near term”.

Six minutes later, EBS Markets were halted.

The cause of the problem was announced at 23:00 CT: a cooling issue at CyrusOne data centres.

CME Group’s data centre is located in Illinois, 35 miles from its headquarters. In promotional material, the company says, “The state-of-the-art data center houses customer equipment in addition to the trade matching engines for all Globex products”.
