Standard Chartered has promoted Margaret Harwood-Jones to CEO for Europe and the UK, effective 1 September.

The newly-created role unifies oversight of the two regions.

Standard Chartered reported US$5.9 billion in operating income over the first quarter of 2026, up 9% year-on-year and a record for the firm.

Harwood-Jones has more than 25 years of industry experience and has been with Standard Chartered since2013, most recently as global head of security services. Her career has also included a decade at BNP Paribas Securities Services.

The bank has also named Jörg Hessenmülle as CEO of Standard Chartered Bank (SCB), the company’s continental European entity, replacing Nicolo Salsano.

Hessenmülle has been chief operating officer at the firm since 2024, and was additionally named chief technology and operations officer for Europe last year. Earlier in his 17-year career, he spent five years at Commerzbank.
