PitchBook provides VC-backed company valuations

Private capital market intelligence platform PitchBook is launching a valuation framework for venture capital (VC)-backed companies.

Valuation Estimates provides real-time, independent valuation benchmarks for private companies, derived from public and private market data and updated on a daily basis. Companies are benchmarked against public and private comparables, with company-specific indicators taken into account.

The service is intended to support workflows within the private capital lifecycle including deal sourcing and pricing, portfolio monitoring, risk management, and fund-level modeling, the firm explained. The ability to benchmark companies against each other will improve pricing confidence in M&A discussion and monitor valuation risk, it added, while allowing users to more precisely plan for liquidity.

Nizar Tarhuni, executive vice president of research and market intelligence at PitchBook, commented, “As the market has become more dynamic and liquidity more uneven, pricing can vary widely depending on who is transacting and why, creating real noise around private company valuations.

“Valuation Estimates sets a consistent valuation anchor by combining what the market has been willing to pay with indicators that track company progress between funding rounds.”

Initially, more than 15,000 VC-backed companies are covered by the tool. PitchBook intends to expand Valuation Estimates with further data inputs, market signals and workflow integrations, as well as scenario-based analysis and predictive insights for portfolio planning and exit timing.

The service is integrated into the PitchBook platform alongside its VC exit predictor and deal sourcing and financial research tool PitchBook Navigator.
